Urban Shaman is the first book in the Walker Papers series by C.E. Murphy. There are 10 books in this series.
Joanne Walker is both a cop and a shaman. Unfortunately, she has only three days in which to learn how to use her magical powers to save the world from the Wild Hunt. Can she do it? We’ll find out whether Joanne is truly the urban shaman everyone needs.
This paranormal-urban sub-genre is a new one for me. I thought I’d check it out to see what the fuss is all about. In the very first paragraph, there’s a joke about Austin Powers’ gross teeth, and right away, I figured this book would be up my alley.

But then, after we’re introduced to Marie and the story behind the Wild Hunt, it feels like something is…missing. This entire book reads as though the main characters—Joanne, Marie, and Gary—are in on some private or inside joke that we’re not being let in on. I felt excluded, like I was truly missing something.
I tried so hard to get into Urban Shaman, but I simply lost interest. I even flipped through the rest of the book, caught a few witticisms and interesting one-liners, and went back to where I left off. But even then, my mind continued to wander and I stayed bored.
Perhaps Urban Shaman isn’t bad at all—it’s entirely possible the problem is me. Maybe I just don’t like this genre. I’m curious to hear what others think.
The books that come next in the Walker Papers series are:
- #2 – Banshee Cries (2020)
- #3 – Thunderbird Falls (2006)
- #4 – Coyote Dreams (2007)
