Crazy Love came out in 2002. It was certainly unique, and I appreciated it for that reason alone. I imagine others would, too, even if they didn’t like it. It’s emotional, shocking, heartwarming, and disturbing, all at the same time, and definitely bound to stick in your head for a little while.
This book is about two people who come together in the oddest way. They live in Appalachia farm country.
Joseph “Bear” Long is a 32-year old farmer who’s never known the touch of a woman. Everyone in town thinks he’s mentally retarded, despite being able to understand and communicate with animals.
Katherine Renault is a classy career lady and animal-rights activist. She’s in town on business, but has to stick around to recover from an illness. When Bear and Katie meet, their love for animals triggers their love for each other.
Crazy Love has a good ending, but it’s not what you’d expect. The story as a whole is remarkably original and very intense in some parts, and the violence and drama is jaw-dropping. I think what I liked most about this book is that it introduced me to David Lozell Martin, and now I’m anxious to read more of his work.
