The Gratitude of Kings is a novella by Marion Zimmer Bradley, who is best known for writing The Mists of Avalon (1979).
This story features Lythande—a centuries-old magician who disguises herself as a boy. Lythande is on her way to perform illusory magic at King Tashgan’s wedding, but when she gets there, she discovers a magic spell has already been cast upon everyone in the wedding party, unbeknownst to them. With help from an old friend named Eirthe, Lythande must stop and reverse the evil black magic before it ruins the kingdom.

The Gratitude of Kings is a true, classic fairytale. It’s simple, and isn’t loaded with silly fantasy names that are difficult to pronounce. It’s an overall good story, and I’d recommend it if you’re already a fan of this author and familiar with the character of Lythande.
