Dead Until Dark

Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. There are 13 books in this series.

Sookie Stackhouse is a 25-year old waitress who works at a bar deep in the Louisiana bayou, during a time when vampires and humans comfortably coexist. Sookie has a unique gift of being able to read minds. She’s also a virgin.

When Sookie is involved in a murder, a vampire named Bill steps in to help, and to keep her safe. The two become romantically involved while they work together to uncover the identity of the real murderer.

Overall, I was disappointed in this book given all the hype about it. I didn’t find Bill to be sexy or appealing enough for a dark, brooding vampire, and there are a few scenes where he doesn’t exactly stand up for Sookie. He’s boring, and lacks charm and wit. Sam, on the other hand, who is Sookie’s boss, is far more charming and more of a man than Bill.

The “whodunnit” part of Dead Until Dark was easy to solve, too. Honestly, I couldn’t even get into HBO’s True Blood, which is based on this series. I won’t be reading any more of these.

I am so glad I am not alone… I thought for sure I was the only one that went "huh?" I did not like many parts of the audio – in some cases a bit too gross for me 🙂
