Little Earthquakes is one of the earliest books by Jennifer Weiner. It’s about four pregnant women who become close friends by sharing their new mom experiences with one another.
First, there’s Becky—a bubbly and plump chef who runs her own restaurant and has the worst mother-in-law on the planet. Then there’s Kelly—a perky, energetic event planner whose husband got laid off and sits around at home going nothing.
Next, there’s Ayinde—the wife of a pro-basketball player who’s landed himself in quite a scandal. Lastly, there’s Lia—a former Hollywood starlet who’s desperate to start a new life in her hometown.
Every chapter in Little Earthquakes shows us how each woman’s life changes over the course of one year. It shows us the struggles they face as new moms while also dealing with their unique situations.
You don’t necessarily have to be a mom to relate to these women, and to recognize their challenges toward becoming stronger, better people.
The dialogues and inner monologues of the women in Little Earthquakes are hilarious and witty. Also, its ending is a tearjerker, so you may want to keep tissues nearby.
My favorite part of the book was probably Becky’s mother-in-law situation. Mimi, her in-law, has zero respect for Becky. It’s so frustrating. There are lots of instances that made me feel angry and grit my teeth, such as, when Mimi tries to dress Becky’s daughter like a hooker, and gives her formula milk instead of breast milk behind Becky’s back. But Mimi eventually gets what she deserves.
Overall, Little Earthquakes was incredibly fun! I highly recommend it.
