Four of a Kind by Valerie Frankel

Four of a Kind is one of many novels by Valerie Frankel, who also writes the Henry Potty series and the Fringe Girl series.

While attending a boring, routine “Diversity Committee” meeting for their kid’s private school in Brooklyn, four of the moms take turns sizing one another up. In an effort to lighten the mood, they decide to have a few drinks and play a round of Texas Hold’em.

Four of a Kind

Things get spicy and fun, and the women eventually loosen up. Traditional poker rules go out the window to make way for “Brooklyn Hold’em”—a game that requires every player to gamble with their deepest, darkest secrets.

Four of a Kind shares the very engaging and enrapturing stories of all four women.

First, there’s Alicia—a sex-crazed, horny lady whose husband doesn’t want to have sex with her any more. Then there’s Robin, a skinny lady who used to be obese, and who’s struggling to keep the identity of her daughter’s father a secret. Next, there’s Bess, the most beautiful of the bunch with a hot and sexy husband who gives her too MUCH sex. Finally, there’s Carla, a doctor who’s coping with an overbearing and chauvinistic husband.

Every week, the women look eagerly forward to their Brooklyn Hold’em game. They go on to develop strong relationships with one another that empower them to become better individuals.

Four of a Kind had me hooked after the end of the first chapter. It’s deliciously raw and naughty, and will satisfy your every craving if you need a girly fun read or pick-me-up.

I like how the author includes a poker game guide and glossary of terms at the end of the book. I’m sure this comes in handy for those who need a refresher on poker rules and guidelines.

I loved Four of a Kind. What did you think about this book?

This sounds really good! And I LOVE the cover. I really enjoy books with multiple story lines that all weave together in the end, and the friendships between women are another element I enjoy.

If this book is really about poker and Texas Holdem then I should probably put it on Mt. TBR list. 😀 Good review – I think I'll have to read this book now.
