I became a fan of Tatiana de Rosnay after reading Sarah’s Key. The Other Story is guaranteed to fascinate, especially if you’re at all familiar with the publishing industry.
The Other Story is practically a parody about how bestselling authors can lose their sense of self and creativity as a result of being sucked into the celebrity lifestyle. In this book, we’re introduced to Nicholas Kolt, who wrote a novel about his family’s past that became an international bestseller and award-winning film. Before he was famous, Nicholas was a humble, compassionate writer. Now, he’s famous, highly sought out, and rich beyond comprehension.
The Other Story takes place over the course of a holiday weekend, when Nicholas is vacationing at a seclusive Tuscan seaside resort. For months, Nicholas has tricked his publishers into thinking he’s on the verge of finishing another bestseller. In reality, he’s been struck with a severe case of writer’s block and is desperate to find inspiration so he can meet his deadline. While at the resort, Nicholas learns a few humbling lessons, but by the end, he still hasn’t changed at all.
Tatiana de Rosnay narrates two stories at once in this book. Nicholas’ past was intriguing, but I loved reading about his experiences on the island even more—especially those involving the ruthless, infamous publisher Dagmar Hunoldt.
Many reviewers say they don’t like a particular book because its main character isn’t likeable. But I enjoyed watching Nicholas suffer. His confusion and hard times were deserved, which was satisfying because he was pathetic.
The Other Story is exemplary. It’s hilarious and brilliant. It’ll be hard for authors, writers, readers, and everyone else in the publishing industry not to love this dark and quirky novel.
Other books by Tatiana de Rosnay include:
- The Rain Watcher (2018)
- Flowers of Darkness (2021)
- Blonde Dust (2025)
