Hidden

Catherine McKenzie is great! I’ve read several of her books and every single one is good.

In Hidden, Jeff Manning is struck by a car and killed while walking home from work. His death has a significant impact on the two most important women in his life—his wife Claire and his co-worker (work wife) Tish—whom Claire had never known about prior to Jeff’s death.

As the novel unfolds, we learn more about Jeff’s deep, yet complex relationships with both Claire and Tish. The novel is told from each of their three voices—including that of Jeff himself from beyond the grave.

As Claire copes with her husband’s death—comforting her teen son, making funeral arrangements, and dealing with Jeff’s brother Tim (who is also her ex-boyfriend), Tish struggles with her own secrets about Jeff, and about accepting that her best friend is gone forever.

I looked forward to all the chapters told from Tish’s point of view. Claire was boring. I was waiting for her character to do something scandalous and exciting.

Initially, I was disappointed in the ending of Hidden. I thought, “That’s it?” But then, after the meaning of the ending sank in, I thought it was clever. I loved Tish even more after the end.

My favorite book by Catherine McKenzie is Forgotten, followed by Spin, then Smoke, then Hidden. Her characters and writing are always highly relatable.
