Between the ages of 9 and 12, I read all the books by Richie Tankersley Cusick, R.L. Stine, and Christopher Pike. Their style is so spooky and edgy, and those books were like nothing else back then (I was born in 1980). After that phase, I moved on to reading Dean Koontz, John Saul, and Stephen King, which kept me busy through most of high school.
In Someone At the Door, teen sisters Hannah and Meg are stranded at home for a few days due to an unexpected snowstorm. Their parents are out of town and won’t be back until the snow lets up.
While the sisters listen to the radio for the latest weather updates, the news reports that a crazy, mass-murderer lunatic has escaped a nearby prison and is on the loose. Later that night, two mysterious young men knock on the girls’ door claiming to be injured and stranded. They need help and a place to stay.
Hesitant at first, Hannah and Meg eventually let the men in and provide them with food and shelter. Over the next few days, the family dog goes missing, Hannah’s clothing is found torn to shreds, and Meg’s favorite teddy bear gets stabbed through the heart. The sisters start to think they’re harboring the mass murderers in their home.
Someone At the Door is timeless. It doesn’t seem ancient or outdated reading it today. I love that there are no mobile phones in these stories.
Other books by Richie Tankersley Cusick include:
- The House Next Door (2002)
- Walk of the Spirits (2008)
- Shadow Mirror (2010)
Did you read these books when they came out in the 80s and 90s?
