I Let You Go book cover

This is the first book by Clare Mackintosh, who’s wildly popular for packing lots of shocking twists into her thrillers.

The prologue of I Let You Go opens onto a heartbreaking scene in the rain, where a 5-year-old boy, Jacob, lets go of his mother’s hand and runs directly into the path of an oncoming car. The little boy dies moments later in his mother’s arms, while the driver of the vehicle backs away and leaves the scene.

Next, the story follows Jenna Gray, whose life will be forever haunted by the tragic hit-and-run. She leaves everything behind in Bristol and escapes to a tranquil seaside village near Swansea, hoping to start anew and heal from the accident.

Meanwhile, back in Bristol, a pair of detectives—Kate and Ray—are working around the clock on the hit-and-run case, hoping to find the person who hit Jacob, as well as his mom, who seems to have disappeared into thin air. When the case officially closes weeks later with no new leads, Kate and Ray follow their instincts and keep working it anyway, determined to get justice for Jacob—and his mother.

Ruth Ware, Shari Lapena, Mary Kubica, Paula Hawkins…if you’re a fan of any of these authors, or if you appreciate lots of twists and turns, you’ll probably enjoy I Let You Go. Good luck trying to figure it out, but that’s what makes it so fun.

I Let You Go is divided into a Part One and a Part Two. Some questions I had during Part One were, “Where is Jacob’s dad during all this, and why hasn’t Jenna mentioned him at all?”

This book does have a distracting subplot, which is the romantic buildup between detectives Kate and Ray. Ray is happily married with kids, but he’s attracted to Kate anyway, and it causes a few minor problems. This would have sat well with me if Ray had been single, divorced, or married to a total wench, but none of those things apply. Maybe the author was planning on making I Let You Go into a series, and that’s why she went in that direction.

My paperback copy of this novel sits at around 450 pages, but you won’t notice its length. It’s addicting and fast-paced—one of those you can’t put down because you’re dying to solve the mystery. I loved that I couldn’t quite figure it out.

I couldn’t help seeing Nicole Kidman’s face on Jenna, mainly because she’s been in a few shows with similar plots. In Nine Perfect Strangers, her daughter rides her bike in the snow and gets hit by a car sliding on a patch of ice. In Expats, her son is abducted in Hong Kong and she searches for him relentlessly.

I’ve also read I See You (2016) and The Last Party (2022) by Clare Mackintosh—both of which were also very good!
