Lost Futures by Lisa Tuttle

Lost Futures is a story about alternate timelines—what would you do if you had the ability to see all the different lives you could have led?

That’s what happens to Clare Beckett. She finds herself jumping from one alternate reality to the next, checking out all the different timelines and directions her life could have gone in. But each alternate reality feels like a dream, so Clare can never tell if the life she’s living is real or a dream.

Lost Futures

The premise of Lost Futures reminds me of similar stories—such as Fringe, which aired on Fox many years ago, and Dark Matter, which streams on Apple. I love the alternate timeline theory, and how it’s explored in this book.

Another thing I appreciate about Lost Futures is how it paints an accurate picture of how confusing things can be, when you’re in that fuzzy place between dreams and reality.

Clare’s grief is so overwhelming toward the end of this book, and I empathized with her. I just wanted her to finally be happy—to settle in to the world she wanted without ever having to leave her preferred timeline.

I’m not sure why Lost Futures is categorized as horror, because it reads more like literature or suspense. Regardless, I thought this book was so good! It was written really well, and really makes you think.
