The Wonder Spot is extremely sarcastic, humorous, and witty. It’s a funny coming-of-age novel by Melissa Bank, who also wrote The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing (1999).
Sophie Applebaum is Jewish. She has two brothers, a scatterbrained mom, and her dad is a judge. Sophie is about 12 years old when the book begins, and the narrative follows her well into her late thirties or so. Along the way, Sophie divulges lots of fun stories about her experiences with boyfriends, school, and jobs.

The Wonder Spot starts out feeling like a typical, run-of-the-mill coming-of-age novel, with nothing that stands out about it. But once you start reading, it’s actually hilarious. It has laugh-out-loud status.
One thing I love about this book is how it reads like the memoir of a comedian. I had to keep reminding myself it was fiction, and not a biography.
Although The Wonder Spot is a fun ride, it ends abruptly. This was my only gripe about the book, otherwise, it was great! I really loved it, and I bet you will, too.
What did you think about The Wonder Spot, did you like it?
