Mum’s the Word is the first book in the Flower Shop Mysteries series by Kate Collins. There are at least 22 books in this series now.
Abby Knight may be a law school dropout, but now she owns Bloomers—a charming little flower shop. One day, someone hits Abby’s vintage canary yellow Corvette parked outside her flower shop, and immediately drives off. Later, Abby finds out the hit-and-run may be linked to a murder that happened in the same neighborhood around the same time.

Feeling super intrigued and determined to find out who hit her car—and who murdered that person—Abby teams up Marco Salvare. Marco is a sexy former cop who now owns a bar.
Abby Knight is an enjoyable character and funny at times, but there’s nothing about her that really stands out. As for the mystery itself, we already know who’s involved, so it’s more about figuring out the “whys” and “hows” in this one.
Overall, I found Mum’s the Word just okay, and I probably wouldn’t read any more of these. But this might be a fun series for people who own or work in flower shops.
The books that come after Mum’s the Word in the Flower Shop Mysteries series are:
- #2 – Slay It With Flowers (2005)
- #3 – Dearly Depotted (2005)
- #4 – Snipped in the Bud (2006)
