Queen of the Slayers is a “Buffyverse” tie-in novel for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

This one picks up just a few hours after Sunnydale is demolished and becomes a giant hole in the ground. The survivors—the remainder of the Scooby gang—are still on that school bus, driving away. If you’re jonesing for more Buffy after the TV show ended, Queen of the Slayers should satisfy your craving.

Queen of the Slayers is really about the chain of events that occur after the Hellmouth is destroyed. For instance, we learn there’s still a version of the Hellmouth in Cleveland, Ohio, but Buffy and friends are needed in England, where the Watcher’s Council is reconvening and more Slayers are coming together.

Faith eventually decides to go to Cleveland with a team of her own, and Buffy stays in Europe to deal with evil forces, even as her fellow Slayers turn against her.

I used to be obsessed with these tie-ins back in the early 2000s, shortly after the Buffy series came to an end. It’s practically pulp fiction to me now, and I’d never read any of these again. Nancy Holder writes a bunch of these tie-ins for Buffy and other shows, including Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Saving Grace, Smallville, and many more.

Sadly, Queen of the Slayers is poorly written and thrown together, and isn’t at all exciting or captivating. Numerous events are strung together haphazardly, and writing feels detached. There are lots of major lulls, with entire chapters devoted to the history and schemes of the enemies.

The book feels like it was written under a tight deadline. In the end, I wish I never found out what happens after the Scooby gang boards the school bus in Sunnydale.

What are your thoughts about these books? Have you read any of them?
