Scared Stiff by Ramsey Campbell is a compilation of short stories that combine elements of horror and sex.
This book features an eloquently written preface by Clive Barker, which gives the impression that great reading is ahead! But sadly, I did not enjoy this book at all.
The writing in Scared Stiff feels a bit archaic and behind the times. It also doesn’t flow too well, which makes it difficult to follow.
The first story called “Dolls” is about a coven of witches who go to church but also engage in ritualistic orgies. I felt “Dolls” was monotonous and unoriginal, and a poor first story to kick off the rest of the book. I didn’t feel that beginning Scared Stiff with a story rich in religious undertones was a great way to grab most readers. I wish had more to say, but I just don’t!
Other recent books by Ramsey Campbell include:
- Fearful Implications (2023)
- The Incubations (2024)
- An Echo of Children (2025)
Did you read Scared Stiff all the way through and if so, what did you think?
