Ghost Music is one of dozens of horror novels by Graham Masterton. He is my favorite horror novelist of all time.

In Ghost Music, Masterton veers away from his usual style of graphic, stomach-wrenching terror to deliver a haunting, yet faintly charming ghost story.

Gideon Lake writes jingles for a living. One day, he experiences love at first sight when he sees Kate Solway gazing at him through his window. Despite the fact Kate lives in the downstairs apartment with her husband, Victor, Gideon can’t help but pursue a passionate affair with the gray-eyed beauty.

Kate begins taking Gideon on a series of romantic vacations in Europe. While there, he notes that Kate and her friends are behaving very strangely. He also notices that phantom images and ghostly apparitions are following him wherever he goes.

Gideon starts questioning his relationship with Kate. Taking advice from his upstairs neighbor, Pearl—an eccentric old lady waiting for her one true love to come back to her (Miss Havisham?)—Gideon realizes he must tread carefully before he becomes a ghost himself!

Ghost Music is unique from other books by Masterton in terms of tone, style, and theme. It’s lyrical and romantic, though a little slow. It’s a bit monotonous, and we figure out what’s going on much sooner than Gideon does.

The novel does carry an air of mystery, and we eventually figure out why Gideon is the only person who can see all the ghosts. The real question is, what do all the ghosts have in common?

I honestly struggled to get through this one, and wouldn’t recommend it. If you want something truly terrifying, I’d recommend Feast or Master of Lies instead. Those scared my pants off.
