Thin, Rich, Pretty by Beth Harbison

Thin, Rich, Pretty opens onto a scene from 20 years ago, focusing on three teenage girls at summer camp: Holly, Nicola, and Lexi.

Holly and Nicola are best friends, while Lexi is a beautiful rich girl both envied and hated by chubby Holly and shy Nicola. Now, 20 years later, Holly and Nicola are still besties, trying to overcome the same insecurities they had years ago. Meanwhile, Lexi is alone and struggling to make ends meet financially.

All three women have tried putting that year at summer camp far behind them, especially given what happened. Yet, that experience continues to haunt and overshadow their present-day lives.

As Holly, Lexi, and Nicola work toward their goals of becoming thinner, richer, and prettier, respectively, they learn it really is possible to leave the past behind and move toward new, beautiful times ahead.

Nearly every book by Beth Harbison is laugh-out-loud funny and nostalgic. I love her numerous references to 80s and 90s pop culture stuff, because I grew up during those times. Holly’s relationship with her boyfriend Randy cracked me up in this one.

I appreciate how Thin, Rich, Pretty pokes fun at common insecurities. Some parts of the book are unrealistic and silly, but I know that’s the point. I believe all the characters in Thin, Rich, Pretty got what they deserved.
