Italian for Beginners is the 5th book by Kristin Harmel.

This story follows 34-year-old Cat Connelly, who’s always been consistent and careful with her lifestyle. Cat’s mom ran off years ago—leaving her behind to raise her younger sister and manage the household while her father works.

One day, many years later, Cat’s mom returns home and dies shortly afterward. After that happens, despite closure, Cat still feels like something major is missing from her life.

Cat goes to her younger sister’s wedding and is ridiculed for still being single at her “old age.” She then decides to vacation in Rome, hoping to reunite with a man she had a fling with years ago. But much to Cat’s dismay, nothing goes quite as planned. Soon, Cat is able to embrace a new life passion and rediscover herself in the process.

Italian for Beginners is fun and inspiring, and has no lulls at all. The beginning of the novel is rife with deprecating humor, which is fun. Cat’s disastrous wedding episode, the humiliating experience with her former Italian lover, and the run-in with her new landlord in Rome make the first few chapters of Italian for Beginners is a fast and fun ride.

Fans of the 1953 Roman Holiday film will appreciate this one, since many scenes are reminiscent of Hepburn’s own actions in the film. The Roman Holiday movie actually plays a major role in Cat’s character development.

The best part of Italian for Beginners is its message to readers. No matter how old you are or what hardships you’ve endured, it’s never too late to create a fresh start for yourself. You can find new love, new family, and new relationships with the most unexpected people.

Hi Sarah, this review makes me want to read this book! It might seem silly, but Blair's obsession with Audrey Hepburn in Gossip Girl inspired me to watch all her movies, so I totally want to read this book now. I have read previews for this author's new release coming out, and it looks good to so I might read that one too.

Thanks Anna Lynn! Haha, you're right – Blair from Gossip Girl IS obsessed with Audrey Hepburn! There are multiple references to Roman Holiday in this novel, so you'll probably have a great time with it.

The Sweetness of Forgetting is on my wish list – I read the synopsis and review for it in my copy of RT Book Reviews magazine.

Thanks for visiting! I sincerely hope you enjoy Italian for Beginners! 🙂
