Always Something There to Remind Me by Beth Harbison

Beth Harbison is one of my all-time favorite chick-lit authors. All her books are funny, warm, endearing, relatable, and a bunch of other positive adjectives.

Always Something There to Remind Me is about the life of Erin Edwards, literally. The book jumps between her teenage years during the 1980s and present day.

Always Something There to Remind Me

Erin is a single mom. When her very hot, but very boring boyfriend proposes, she instantly thinks about her Nate Lawson, her high school sweetheart. Years ago, she broke up with him over a petty miscommunication. Now, she can’t stop thinking about him, so she tracks him down and makes a few seemingly awkward discoveries about herself in the process.

Always Something There to Remind Me tugged on my heart strings. Its story is wildly romantic and endearing. The 1980s flashbacks do get repetitive at times. Every chapter commences with heavy petting and a countless number of “I love yous.” But the ending makes it worthwhile.

One thing I did like was Erin’s take in regards to choosing single motherhood over being married to someone you’re not too crazy about. That should always stand true, regardless of whether or not you’re a parent.

My favorite part of the book was when present-day Erin talks to an elderly woman about her dead husband. The old woman says it’s important to “try” lots of different men until you find the one you can “stay” in love with. True, true.

My least favorite part of the book was the overly theatrical and unrealistic reunion between Erin and Nate in present day. That’s all I’m saying.
