Castaways is basically a horrifying version of the show Survivor.
In Castaways, a group of reality show contestants are competing against one another to be the last person standing on a small island. In the style of Survivor, contestants vote for the person they want banished from the island. The last person who remains after completing all the challenges wins one million dollars.
When tropical storm Ivan threatens to ravage the island, the show’s producers leave the contestants behind without radio contact. It’s only then that the contestants learn the island actually isn’t deserted at all. Now, they must survive and protect themselves from the monstrous indigenous people who are killing all the contestants.
Castaways is what I like to refer to as “horror candy.” This book is jam-packed with action and has a few red herrings to take you by surprise.
My favorite character in Castaways is Matthew. I enjoyed his rants about government conspiracies, corporate America, and pop culture.
The monsters who terrorize the contestants in Castaways are incredibly freaky and scary. Let’s just say hairy, bulbous, deformed penises are involved, and leave the rest to your imagination.
Everything about Castaways is satisfying: its plot, its surprises, and its horror.
I’ve also read and reviewed Urban Gothic by Brian Keene which was also very good!
Other books by Brian Keene include:
- Nemesai (2020) (with John Urbancik)
- Suburban Gothic (2021) (with Bryan Smith)
- Things Left Behind (2023) (with Mary SanGiovanni)
- Island of the Dead (2024)
