House of Bones is one of a billion horror novels by Graham Masterton. He’s more widely known in the U.K., which is why I love writing about him. I enjoy introducing him to Americans who are unfamiliar with his work. He is the REAL King of Horror, and I’m a die-hard fan.
House of Bones came out in 1998. It’s about a young realtor named John who learns that his office manager, Mr. Vane, is managing several spooky houses with walls that seem to eat people, literally.

In each of these homes, sets of bones—both new and old—are found behind the walls, and the people viewing these properties are disappearing. One day, John witnesses his coworker experience a terrifying, freaky death, and so he heroically starts to investigate, intent on putting the nasty house demons to rest.
The premise of some of these horror novels seem utterly ridiculous, but somehow, Masterton turns of each them into masterpieces. House of Bones features a people-eating house and a murderous, marble statue that comes to life. It’s truly terrifying.
House of Bones is far too short, and ended far too soon. But I loved it, and recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good scare.
Other books by Graham Masterton include:
- The Soul Stealer (2022)
- The House at Phantom Park (2022)
- What Hides in the Cellar (2023)
- House of Flies (2025)
