Spitting Image is the 1st book in the Simone Darling series by M.K. Mattias.
Freelance art restorer Simone Darling isn’t having luck with her art restoration business at home in Sydney, Australia. When her newlywed mom offers her a chance to appraise art for thousands of dollars in Miami, Florida, she immediately boards a plane for the sunshine state with her boyfriend, Kevin.

Shortly after arriving in Florida, Simone and Kevin find a dead body in the refrigerator that happens to look very much like Kevin. Simone becomes intent on learning why her mom’s new mysterious husband Curtis is storing dead bodies in their freezer, especially when they are dead ringers for her boyfriend.
According to its book cover, Spitting Image is “a novel of mystery and misadventure.” The series reminds me a lot of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Simone and Kevin experience lots of kooky mishaps while solving this mystery and finding out why Curtis is so strange and secretive.
Simone lacks common sense and she isn’t very intelligent. Her idiocy is not charming or funny.
The beginning of Spitting Image gives the impression that Simone’s skills in art restoration will help her solve the mystery, but art restoration isn’t mentioned again until the very end. The book is all over the place and not at all fun or believable.
