A Catch in Time is about a group of people who band together after the majority of the global population dies from a mysterious blackout. For three minutes, everyone in the world falls unconscious during the blackout, except a few who are enlightened with visions that help them grasp and understand the true meaning of life.
Of those who end up surviving the blackout, some turn into Shaitan—a group of evil, malicious people who act like animals in their drive to kill off the rest of the innocent human population.
The synopsis of A Catch in Time reads like a cross between Under the Dome by Stephen King and The Walking Dead on AMC.
Roddy’s writing style is simple and fun, and not too much is divulged about the alien and otherworldly events that triggered the blackout. In fact, Roddy never reveals exactly who or what caused the blackout, though characters think it may be government-related.
This novel sits at 550+ pages and is quite the tome, but you’ll hardly notice because it goes fast. It has no lulls and follows the same group of core characters for several years following the blackout.
While A Catch in Time may be intriguing, its conclusion is barely memorable. The climax lacks excitement, but surprisingly doesn’t spoil the novel completely.
Dalia Roddy has also written The Keeper, about small aliens or creatures that come out of a mysterious box.
