I decided to take a walk down memory lane and read Midnight Whispers again after watching Flowers in the Attic on Lifetime. It’s the 4th book in the Dawn Cutler series by V.C. Andrews.
In this one, Dawn’s daughter Christie falls prey to the same twisted family incest curse, like mother like daughter. After a fire destroys Cutler Cove hotel and kills her beloved parents, Christie and her brother Jefferson go to live with their terrible Uncle Philip, his wife Aunt Bet, and their evil twin cousins, Richard and Melanie.
One night, Uncle Philip molests Christie in her sleep, and she immediately runs away with her brother. The only solace that remains in Christie’s life is knowing she can one day reunite with Gavin—the half-brother of her adoptive father, Jimmy.
This novel isn’t happy or light. I don’t know why I found drama like this so fascinating as a kid, but these are way too depressing and melodramatic to read nowadays.
It’s upsetting how the young women in these V.C. Andrews series allow themselves to be harassed, bossed around, and manipulated. In Midnight Whispers, Christie has around a billion opportunities to speak up and get revenge on her nasty family members.
The Dawn Cutler series is the first full series written by V.C. Andrews’ ghostwriter, Leigh Nichols. I remember feeling disconnected from Dawn when this series first came out, and she was always my least favorite character from all the series. I own the full series in hardback, not sure why, but I guess I’ve always considered them classics!
