That’s Not All Folks! is a memoir and biography by Mel Blanc—the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and hundreds of other Looney Tunes characters.
Mel Blanc (1908-1989) was a true comedic genius. He worked from the ground up to establish himself as one of the most talented, successful people in Hollywood during that time. In this book, he discusses the many inspirations behind his Looney Tunes voices, and the ladders he climbed to fulfill his dreams. I know many stars and celebrities have similar stories to share, but Mel Blanc’s story is truly inspiring given the time period in which he lived.
There are two major components that make That’s Not All Folks incredible and extremely worthwhile: the book’s photos and Mel Blanc’s account of how he established himself in Hollywood.
Mel Blanc looks so charismatic and happy in every picture. He looks like he genuinely loved his life and work. Career-wise, Blanc didn’t get an easy break. He worked hard and literally starved, but never gave up.
A few large chunks/sections in this book were a little boring—mainly because of Blanc’s excessive name-dropping. It could have been his way of paying tribute to those people, but it was annoying and unnecessary. He also shares some very minute details about cartoon plots that are also snooze-worthy. Other than that, it’s a fun, insightful read.
That’s Not All Folks has been out of print for many years—I had ordered my copy used from someone years ago. If you can still get your hands on a copy, hold on for dear life.
I also featured this book in another blog post called A Few Oddball Biographies & Memoirs I’ve Read.
Have you read That’s Not All Folks? What other books have you read that sound similar to this one?
