The Innocent is the first book in the War of the Roses series (or Anne trilogy) by Posie Graeme-Evans. This one takes place in 1450 medieval Britain during the reign of King Henry VI—the War of the Roses. Next in line for the crown is King Edward IV.
Anne is beautiful, intelligent, and modest. She also knows how to cure illnesses using herbs and nature’s ingredients.
For these exact reasons, Anne is called to court under King Edward IV to help cure the queen. While attending the queen, Anne catches the king’s eye and they soon begin to fall in love. Eventually, we come to learn there’s royalty in Anne’s bloodline, which sends the court into a tizzy.
The Innocent is simply exquisite. Anne is extremely likeable and admirable, and all the characters are written so colorfully—they really do come to life on page. I loved reading all the bits about Queen Elizabeth Woodville and Doctor Moss.
This author writes great historical fiction. If you like Philippa Gregory‘s style, you’ll probably love this series by Posie Graeme-Evans.
The next book is called The Exiled, and the 3rd book is called The Beloved, but it looks like most versions were renamed to The Uncrowned Queen.
Other books by Posie Graeme-Evans include:
- The Dressmaker (2010)
- The Island House (2012)
- Wild Wood (2015)
What are your thoughts? Have you read anything else by this author?
