The Exiled is the 2nd book in the War of the Roses series (or Anne trilogy) by Posie Graeme-Evans.
In the first book, The Innocent, Anne was a servant who eventually came to care for the queen and become her medicine woman. Anne’s gentle ways, intelligence, and beauty caught the eye of King Edward IV, and the duo worked hard to keep their love affair a secret.
Now, in The Exiled, Anne de Bohun has full knowledge of her true identity and royal bloodline. She’s escaped to Brugge and established herself as a successful merchant and businesswoman. But much to Anne’s dismay, there’s still a price on her head. She narrowly escapes several assassination attempts, and learns it’s Queen Elizabeth Grey who’s ordering the hits.
Anne must now be more cautious than ever, and rely on her intelligence and wit to stay alive. Meanwhile, her love for King Edward IV continues to burn as strongly as ever.
The Exiled is elegantly written, and a true page-turner. It’s also very romantic. I like how Anne de Bohun is far stronger and more confident in this book.
I also like how some authors influence you to take sides with certain characters. For instance, it’s amusing to read The White Queen by Philippa Gregory, which is told from Elizabeth Grey’s point of view as “the victim.” Then, in The Exiled, we freaking hate Elizabeth Grey.
This author’s stories are so richly and intricately composed. It’s easy to develop a vivid picture in your head of all the book’s settings. Sometimes I feel like I’m in the same room with the characters. Good stuff.
Here’s my review of The Innocent. The 3rd book in this series is called The Beloved, but it looks like most versions were renamed to The Uncrowned Queen.
Other books by Posie Graeme-Evans include:
- The Dressmaker (2010)
- The Island House (2012)
- Wild Wood (2015)
What do you think about this series, do you like it?
