Me And My Shadows is a biography about Judy Garland, written by her daughter, Lorna Luft. The Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorite movies, so of course this book was a must-read for me.
In the first half of Me and My Shadows, Lorna talks about her childhood and about the big responsibility she had taking care of her mom. The book reveals a lot about Judy Garland’s substance abuse, and about her other behavioral disorders.
The second part of this book is about Lorna’s coping and recovering from her mom’s death, and about her rise to stardom with her mom’s fame shadowing her.
My main gripe about Me and My Shadows is that it was written too early. I would have loved to learn more about Liza Minnelli’s downfall, and about what’s been going on with the Lufts since this book came out. Unfortunately, Me and My Shadows is quite dated, and it’s doubtful many people would enjoy it today.
