The Girl Who Fell From the Sky is the first and only book by Heidi W. Durrow. It’s about a young girl named Rachel who is half Danish, half African-American.
Rachel is special, because she once “fell” off the top of an apartment building on a mattress with her mom and siblings, and was the only survivor. So there’s that, and the fact that she’s biracial, and wants the world to recognize that she proudly represents both races, and not just one or the other.

I couldn’t understand why Rachel’s identity crisis in this book was so harrowing. There are an estimated 3.1 million people in the U.S. who identify as White and Black, and mixed races are widely celebrated in our country. Even Pew Research says multiracial Americans are “proud, diverse and growing in numbers.” The racial conflicts in this book aren’t too original, and they’ve already been talked about and dissected in a billion other books and places all over the web.
What I did enjoy about The Girl Who Fell From the Sky was trying to figure out what really happened to Rachel’s family on the day they died. The novel really keeps you guessing until the end. I also like how each chapter is narrated by a different character.
What did you think about this book, did you like it? I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.
