Nothing Happens Until it Happens to You is the first book by T.M. Shine. It’s a satirical take on what happens when you lose your job in the vicious throes of today’s economy.
Jeffrey Reiner is perfectly comfortably working as the calendar editor for a newspaper—that is, until he’s laid off during his lunch break.
Now, Jeffrey must find another good-paying job before his severance pay runs out. So he takes on a series of oddball jobs that cause him to re-evaluate whether slaving away for Corporate America is truly how he wants to spend the rest of his professional life.

Nothing Happens Until it Happens to You is extremely hilarious, entertaining, and relatable. If you’ve ever been laid off or lost a great job, you’ll probably appreciate this one.
Shine compares many of his characters to popular celebrities such as Amanda Peet and Jack Black, which makes for fun reading. His humor is also very sarcastic, and he sprinkles in lots of funny comments and anecdotes about unemployment.
Maybe you’ll think about this book the next time you see someone standing on the corner wearing the Liberty Tax costume. You’ll know what I mean after you read it.
Other books by T.M Shine include:
- Timeline Month In The Life Of A Guy Who Refuses
- Fathers Aren’t Supposed to Die: Five Brothers Reunite To Say Good-bye
