Body Surfing by Anita Shreve

Body Surfing is the 4th book in the Fortune’s Rocks series by Anita Shreve, but it reads perfectly fine as a standalone novel.

At the age of 29, Sydney has been both divorced and widowed. When the wealthy family she works for takes her to their New Hampshire beach house, she finds herself in a love triangle with two brothers. That’s basically the premise of this novel.

Body Surfing is definitely fast-paced and will no doubt keep you engaged. However, it’s tone is cold and detached, which makes it difficult to connect with and relate to the characters.

There’s also no chemistry between Sydney and the brothers. It’s like we’re told how they feel about one another, instead of shown. Other gripes I had were that the vocabulary is limited and redundant, and the same expressions and words are used repeatedly, which gets old.

Lastly, there’s nothing original about the plot of Body Surfing, and it’s very predictable.

Can you tell I didn’t care for this book too much? You’d be wise to skip it, even if you typically enjoy Anita Shreve. It’s not worth your time.

I totally agree with your review. This was the only Shreve book I've read, but I wasn't thrilled. It was predictable and it was cliched, but I'm not opposed to trying one of the ones you enjoyed.

    Thanks for your review!
