Important Artifacts

This particular book is truly unique, maybe one of the most original books I’ve seen since House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris is a literary “auction” book. The items in this book represent and tell a story about the four-year relationship between Lenore and Harold.

Twenty-something Lenore writes a cake-related column for The New York Times. Harold is a freelance photographer in his 40s. Important Artifacts is a story told completely in photos of the couple’s personal belongings. Letters, lingerie, post-it notes, and gifts are just some of many items featured in this book. Miraculously, the pictures adequately reflect the ups and downs of their beautiful and romantic relationship.

The concept of Important Artifacts is wildly original. The author’s ability to tell a complete story through pictures is impressive and utterly fascinating. There’s no official narrative that goes with the photos.

What’s even more sensational about Important Artifacts are the characters, Lenore and Harold. They both seem incredibly witty, intelligent, and artistic. I recommend checking out this book, if you get the opportunity.

Have you seen this book? If so, what did you think?
