When I initially wrote this post in 2011, “chick-lit” was a sub-genre that referred to contemporary fiction aimed at women. Apparently the phrase is considered too sexist now, so nobody uses it anymore.
But, I don’t get caught up in all that. Here are my top, most favorite chick-lit authors.
Kathleen Tessaro
Kathleen Tessaro writes such beautiful prose and creates genuine, unforgettable, romantic stories that hook you. I’ve reviewed these books by her:
- The Perfume Collector (2013)
- The Debutante (2010)
All Tessaro’s novels are extremely feminine. They made me feel even more beautiful after reading them. I also love how her protagonists are intelligent and not ditzy like lots of other chick-lit characters. I recommend starting with The Flirt because it’s my favorite!
Isabel Wolff
Isabel Wolff gets better with every book she releases. I’ve read all her earliest novels, but reviewed only A Vintage Affair (2008) for this website.
The Trials of Tiffany Trott (1998) is lighthearted and funny. I’d honestly recommend reading all of Wolff’s novels in the order they were published. Mainly so you can experience and appreciate how every novel gets better.
One thing to mention is that Wolff’s books tend to be on the longer side for this genre, usually more than 400 pages. So if you want more bang for your buck, load up on some Isabel Wolff.
Other books by Isabel Wolff include:
- Forget Me Not (2007)
- The Very Picture of You (2011)
- Shadows Over Paradise (2014)
Cecelia Ahern
I almost ranked Cecelia Ahern #1, but the reason I didn’t is because I don’t love her books that lean more toward fantasy. My favorite thing about Ahern is that she writes with feeling. Her books evoke so many emotions! She’s also written some of the saddest novels I’ve ever read, so make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.
I’ve reviewed these books by Ahern:
- If You Could See Me Now (2005)
- There’s No Place Like Here (2006)
- Thanks for the Memories (2007)
P.S. I Love You, also made into a movie with Hilary Swank, is one of my all-time favorite books. It’s about a young woman named Holly whose husband dies from cancer, but before he does, he manages to write a giant stack of letters to her. Holly starts receiving the letters after he dies, which instruct her to perform various tasks designed to help her move on.
Anyway, P.S. I Love You is a must-read. Other books by Cecelia Ahern include:
- In a Thousand Different Ways (2022)
- Into the Storm (2024)
- Paper Heart (2025)
Beth Harbison
I became a huge fan of Beth Harbison after reading her first book, Shoe Addicts Anonymous. All her books are hilarious, fun, and very relatable! Many are also very nostalgic if you grew up during the 80s and 90s.
Secrets of a Shoe Addict, which is the sequel to Shoe Addicts Anonymous, is about women who start a phone sex business to pay for their debt, or shoes, I don’t remember which. But it’s super funny.
I’ve reviewed these books on my website:
- Shoe Addicts Anonymous (2007)
- Secrets of a Shoe Addict (2008)
- Thin, Rich, Pretty (2010)
- Always Something There to Remind Me (2011)
When I see books by Harbison I haven’t read yet, I buy them without reading the synopsis. I already know they’re going to be great, so I don’t bother.
Other books by Beth Harbison include:
- Every Time You Go Away (2018)
- The Cookbook Club (2020)
- Confessions of the Other Sister (2022)
What are your favorite chick-lit books? I’d love to hear what you think about authors or books related to this genre.
