Girls of Summer is the 2nd book in the Shelter Rock Cove series by Barbara Bretton.
Ellen Markowitz has been lusting over Hall Talbot for months. Ellen and Hall are gynecologists who work for the same practice, so Ellen gets to see and spend time with her heart’s desire nearly every day.
After an impromptu and spontaneous night on the town, Ellen and Hall get drunk and have a steamy one night stand—which is actually how Girls of Summer begins! But sadly for Ellen, Hall is still obsessed about some other woman.

Next, Ellen’s very bohemian sister Deirdre pops in unexpectedly for a visit. She helps Ellen loosen up and experience some epiphanies about her life in general.
“Girls of Summer” is a lame title for this book, considering how great it is. The sleepy, small-town New England setting is perfect for this story, as is the gossipy nature of the townspeople. I like how this book starts out backward, with Ellen and Hall sleeping together at the beginning of the book before their true romance unfolds. Overall, it was a great read.
I’ve also reviewed Chances Are by this author, which was also very good!
Other books by Barbara Bretton include:
- Guilty Pleasures (1996)
- Forever in Time (2004)
- A Wedding in Paris (2010)
