Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures is the 1st book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It was okay, but not great. A little outdated.

In a parallel universe, vampires have the same rights as humans. Twenty-something Anita Blake is a professional vampire hunter and necromancer who goes after only the bad vampires. She refuses to mingle with vampires outside of work, but one night her girlfriends persuade her into visiting Guilty Pleasures, a vampire club owned by a local vampire coven.

At Guilty Pleasures, Anita meets Jean-Claude—a powerful, sexy, irresistible master vampire who needs her help tracking a serial killer who’s murdering innocent vampires.

The chapters in Guilty Pleasures are about 2 to 5 pages long, which makes for light, easy reading with plenty of breaks. The novel also has a long and diverse cast of characters that lead to many exciting subplots. Anita Blake reminds me of a sassier, more brutal version of Stephanie Plum, and these books are actually narrated in the same style of the Janet Evanovich series.

Laurell K. Hamilton combines a bunch of genres into this series: violence, romance, fantasy, crime, and humor. I also like that the author doesn’t hold anything back in terms of grit, violence, and sex, and I find that unpredictable and exciting as a result.

There are now 30 books in the Anita Blake series!

I’ve also read and reviewed The Laughing Corpse and Circus of the Damned.

What do you think about these books?
