The Smoke Thief by Shana Abe

The Smoke Thief is the first book in the Drakon series by Shana Abe. It’ll be the last, for me.

This one takes place in England during the 1700s. It’s about a breed of fantasy people who are half-human, half-dragon. There’s a dragon lady named Rue Hawthorne, who steals valuable jewels for fun. One day, she meets another dragon guy, a Marquess named Christoff. Together, they go hunting for a missing diamond that will help them keep their dragon identities hidden from the rest of the world.

The Smoke Thief starts out feeling pretty adventurous and enchanting, and there’s a fun prologue that lays out the history of the Drakon people. In fact, the font, typeset, and artwork in both the prologue and epilogue are a beautiful touch, and invoke moods of intrigue and fantasy.

Anyway, the exchanges between Rue and Christoff are too predictable and redundant. The dialogue isn’t witty, and is very plain, considering the time period in which it’s supposed to take place. Overall, it was a snooze, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
