Aunt Dimity Goes West is the 12th book in the Aunt Dimity mystery series by Nancy Atherton. In this one, we get a break from rural England and follow Lori Shepherd to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
Lori’s husband Bill is super busy with work, so he rents a cozy cabin in the Rocky Mountains for his wife and kids. When Lori gets there, she learns the cabin’s caretaker has disappeared. Oh no! So she plays detective to find out what happened to him and where he went.

Aunt Dimity Goes West was just okay for me. I couldn’t get into this one like I could the other books.
Bill is stuck at work in nearly all these books, and it seems like Lori always flirts with whichever male helps her out. In this one, it’s the new young caretaker who replaces the one who went missing. Lori gets a bit horny, and there’s always a bit of romantic chemistry between her and whoever. But in the end, she stays faithful to her husband. I’m glad for that, otherwise I probably wouldn’t enjoy these.
There was something I found annoying in this book—the doppelganger joke. It gets old after the first few times. Apparently, in this sleepy Colorado mountain town, there are doppelgangers or “doubles” of some of the characters from England, like the Pym sisters and Sally Pyne. They even have similar names. It’s amusing at first, until it isn’t.
There are 25 books in the Aunt Dimity series, wow! The ones that come after Aunt Dimity Goes West are:
- #13 Aunt Dimity, Vampire Hunter (2008)
- #14 Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon (2009)
- #15 Aunt Dimity Down Under (2010)
