Speaking in Tongues is a standalone thriller from Jeffery Deaver, who writes the Lincoln Rhyme (The Bone Collector) series. This book is extremely fast-paced! I bet you’ll devour it within a few hours.
Megan McCall is a troubled teenager who sees a therapist on a regular basis. Estranged from both of her parents, Megan remains damaged by the divorce between her free-spirited mother Bett, and her attorney father Tate Collier.
When Megan is kidnapped by a man pretending to be her “substitute” therapist, Bett and Tate reconnect to search for their daughter. Little do they know that the kidnapper, Aaron Matthews, has distant ties to their family and is out to hurt them.
Speaking in Tongues is lacking in the character development department—maybe because it’s a standalone and not part of a series. It feels too rushed, condensed, and shallow, even though it at well over 300 pages. This may also be because Tate’s character is somewhat detached and I don’t feel a connection with him.
Also, Speaking in Tongues seems to lack the usual amount of forensics, mind tricks, and violence present in other books by this author. These components are there, but not in high doses.
Overall, this book was just okay, and I wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve read a few of these standalones by Deaver and they’re just not as good as his Lincoln Rhyme series.
Other books by Jeffery Deaver include:
- The Bodies Left Behind (2008)
- Edge (2010)
- The October List (2013)
