A Thread of Grace is the 3rd book by Mary Doria Russell. This one is set against the backdrop of 1943 Europe.

Teenage Claudette Blum is Jewish, and with the Nazis coming for her, she escapes to Italy with her father and other refugees to escape persecution. In short, this book is about how a group of Italians saves thousands of Jews near the end of WWII.

The best and most amazing part of A Thread of Grace is its prelude, hands down. It may be the best I’ve ever read because it’s gripping and shocking. It pulls you in and makes you more interested in the story.

All in all, I found A Thread of Grace to be very dry and slow. It just isn’t as engaging as I hoped. It offers lots of useful and interesting WWII facts and information—but you know what, it’s all been done before. It doesn’t really stand out from other novels with similar plots.
