Dream House is the only novel by Valerie Laken. It’s about a young married couple named Kate and Stuart who buy an old, rundown home in desperate need of repairs and renovations.
Kate soon learns that their new home was the scene of a violent crime many years ago. Shortly after, she meets a strange man who’s been lurking around in the neighborhood. Eventually, the many dark secrets about the house are revealed.
Dream House is incredibly moving. I loved how the author was able to paint an incredibly vivid picture of house’s history and life over the years. It was written so well, I could almost smell the oldness of the house. The mystery surrounding the house is undeniably intriguing. Definitely a page-turner.
I also like the side story regarding Kate and Stuart’s marriage problems, and how it presents the situation from both viewpoints. Kate is uptight, which is crucial to the overall plot development of Dream House.
Valerie Laken has also written a collection of stories called Separate Kingdoms, but that’s it. She hasn’t released anything else.
