Black Friday is the 7th book in the Maggie O’Dell series by Alex Kava.
Everyone knows Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. On Black Friday, at the Minnesota Mall of America, three young men make plans to crash the mall’s computer systems just to make trouble. But everyone’s surprised when the men blow up, seemingly detonated by someone else and turned into suicide bombers. Maggie O’Dell gets called to the scene to figure out what happened.
Maggie soon learns that the suicide bombers were just the first step in a larger plan to kill many more people. She teams up with former flame and detective Nick Morrelli to hunt down the killer before it’s too late.
The story in Black Friday reminds me of those stemming from conspiracy theories regarding a possible accomplice to Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing.
The books in this series are incredibly fast-paced and highly suspenseful. They remind me of the ones by Jeffery Deaver, who wrote the Lincoln Rhyme series (The Bone Collector was #1 in the series). Black Friday is packed with red herrings and plot twists, which makes them incredibly fun.
In Black Friday, we are introduced to Maggie’s younger brother. I like how he gives us a more intimate glimpse into Maggie’s personal life, especially considering Nick Morrelli is back in the game to shake up her life.
