Hotwire is the 9th book in the Maggie O’Dell series by Alex Kava.
On a dull evening somewhere in Nebraska, a group of teenagers are in a forest experimenting with psychedelic drugs. Moments later, they see a mysterious fireworks and laser show—ending in their electrocution and death.
FBI Special Agent Maggie O’Dell happens to stumbles upon the incident while investigating cattle mutilation nearby. She then gets thrust into the middle of a conspiracy she must resolve before more teens die.
Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., Maggie’s boyfriend, Army colonel Dr. Benjamin Platt, is investigating a poisonous outbreak that’s infected hundreds of school children. When he discovers the kids have been contaminated by their school lunch, Platt, like Maggie, is thrust into the middle of yet another unethical conspiracy. Platt must work with the right government parties to make sure no poisonous food is released to the public ever again.
Alex Kava is a master at red herrings and plot twists, but Hotwire just doesn’t stack up to her other books in this regard. The story is suspenseful and gripping, but doesn’t leave much room for guessing.
The parallel plots/storylines for O’Dell and Platt make for an interesting approach to the book, but they just don’t intersect and come together in the end like you hope they would. Hotwire was “just okay” for me.
Other books by Alex Kava include:
- Fireproof (2012)
- Stranded (2013)
- Off The Grid (2016)
