Iced Chiffon is the 1st book in the Consignment Shop mystery series by Duffy Brown. It takes place in Savannah, Georgia and features amateur sleuth Reagan Summerside.
Reagan is working hard to recover financially from an ugly divorce that left her with nearly penniless, with the exception of some designer clothes and high-end goods. At the age of 32, Reagan feels bitter about her realtor ex-husband Hollis Beaumont, who left her for “Cupcake”—a gold-digging bimbo half his age. In an effort to pull her life back together, Reagan turns part of her home into a consignment shop.
Shortly into the book, Cupcake is found murdered and stashed into the trunk of Hollis’ car. Despite feeling hatred toward her ex, Reagan knows in her heart that Hollis is innocent, and sets out to discover who’s framed him for his girlfriend’s murder.
Walker Boone is Reagan’s new “nemesis.” He’s a sexy, street-smart lawyer who actually helped Hollis screw Reagan over in the divorce. Reagan’s personal goal is to learn the identity of the true murderer before Walker does, but it seems like wherever she goes, Walker’s not too far behind.
Iced Chiffon starts out a bit patchy. It starts out with Reagan not knowing how to support herself financially, then segues into the opening of her consignment store—all of which feels a bit vague and hazy. But I really dig the chemistry between Reagan and Walker. I’m excited to see how their dynamic works out in future installments of this series.
The novel picks up about halfway through, and offers a satisfying climax preceded by strategically placed and well thought-out red herrings.
My favorite aspect of Iced Chiffon is Reagan herself. I also like how this book features lots of zany Southern euphemisms and kooky quotes from Cher. I don’t think the quotes from Cher are real, but they’re still funny.
There are 6 books in the Consignment Shop series. I’ve also read and reviewed these other ones in the series:
