Death of a Scriptwriter is the 14th book in the Hamish Macbeth mystery series by M.C. Beaton.
In this one, a group of Hollywood filmmakers head to the Highlands to film a TV show based on a famous mystery book series. But the writers and producers have completely rewritten the characters and plot—making a total mockery of the highly esteemed mystery series.
This pisses off the author of the series, who is found murdered shortly thereafter. So now it’s up to Hamish to figure out whodunnit.
Death of a Scriptwriter is incredibly funny, especially when the people of Lochdubh get super excited and obsessed about Hollywood coming to town. The characters in this series are so quirky and funny, and so far off the mark. It’s actually pretty cute. Some of the village women even go so far as to make their own film.
If you’re new to the series, don’t sweat it—Death of a Scriptwriter can definitely be read on its own as a standalone.
The next books in the series are:
- #15 – Death of an Addict (1999)
- #15.5 – A Highland Christmas (1999)
- #16 – Death of a Dustman (2001)
