Sweet Jiminy by Kristin Gore

Sweet Jiminy is the 3rd book by Kristin Gore, who hasn’t published anything else since this came out in 2011.

In this story, Jiminy Davis, 25 years old, is already feeling the strain of law school. Eager for a break and change of pace, she decides to visit her grandmother in Mississippi for the summer.

Shortly after she gets there, she starts poking around in old family journals. She reads about another Jiminy in her family’s history. But when she starts asking her family about Jiminy, they refuse to talk about her. This makes Jiminy even more curious and intriguted, and so she embarks on a journey to learn everything she can about this other Jiminy.

Kristin Gore is an amazing novelist. I read her other books, Sammy’s Hill and Sammy’s House, and loved them both. They were so funny.

It’s exciting to discover that her writing versatility extends to emotional and serious novels in addition to comedy. Sweet Jiminy is pretty short, as it sits at under 250 pages. But it’s well-crafted and beautiful. It’s also surprisingly suspenseful given the subject matter. I like how Jiminy brings her urban, big-city mentality to a small Mississippi town and sets out to make things right.

Hello! Sammy's Hill is one of my all-time favorite novels and I definitely recommend it if you love a good laugh. Also — yes! Kristin Gore is Al Gore's daughter.
