Harlan Coben writes the Myron Bolitar series. Caught is one of his standalone novels. It came out in 2010.
Dan Mercer is well-liked and popular, especially among the teenagers he helps as a social worker. When Dan is called to the home of a teenage girl to help her through a crisis, he’s surprised to see a news crew waiting for him instead. He learns he’s being set up.
Within minutes, Dan goes from being the neighborhood saint to a creepy child molester. Enter Wendy Tynes—a reporter devoted to keeping kids and teens safe by exposing sexual predators on national TV.
It’s not too long before Wendy realizes Dan is innocent and may have been set up. Now, it’s up to Wendy to help Dan repair his reputation and discover who’s really behind these crimes.
Caught is a suspenseful page-turner, though it’s lacking a bit in character depth and substance. I thought it was interesting how Wendy comes across like a nasty, ruthless wench at first, before you get to know her later on. I thought it was difficult to solve this mystery, as it didn’t really seem like things added up until the very end. I like how Caught held my interest, even if it wasn’t very memorable.
What I probably enjoyed most about Caught were the unemployed has-beens who were friends with Dan’s old college buddy. One of the guys was trying to be a popular, white rapper, while another was trying to make money selling junk on eBay. They were funny.
I’m not sure I would recommend this book to anyone. It was the first novel I’ve ever read by Harlan Coben and I wasn’t too crazy about it.
Other books by Harlan Coben include:
- Run Away (2019)
- I Will Find You (2023)
- Gone Before Goodbye (with Reese Witherspoon) (2025)
