Death of a Maid

Death of a Maid is the 22nd book in the Hamish MacBeth mystery series by M.C. Beaton.

When nosy, annoying, and meddlesome maid Mrs. Gillespie becomes the victim of a violent crime in the small town of Lochdubh, constable Hamish MacBeth is assigned the case, of course. While investigating, he learns Mrs. Gillespie was very skilled in the blackmailing department, and that her long list of victims is equal to the number of suspects he must interrogate for her murder.

On top of all that, Hamish has to face his ex-girlfriend Elspeth Grant—a reporter who’s come back to Lochdubh for a brief vacation. When she brings her male coworker along to make Hamish jealous, he starts questioning whether he still harbors feelings for Elspeth.

Death of a Maid will have you in stitches, because it’s funny like all the others. Hamish’s ongoing love dilemma is also entertaining. Maybe he’ll stay single forever, just like Agatha Raisin.

I loved when Detective Chief Inspector Blair—Hamish’s archenemy—convinces a television crew to feature Hamish in a documentary about successful detectives with high hopes Hamish will be transferred to a station outside Lochdubh. His plan backfires when Hamish turns the tables and convinces the television crew that Blair is the superior detective. Too funny.
